Golf Tee Height for Driver: Why There Is No Single Exact Height

This article used to promise "the exact height that maximizes distance." That promise was wrong, and we have rewritten the page to say so. Tee height interacts with your swing, your driver and your typical strike — so the honest answer is a starting point plus a testing method, not a universal number. Here is both, with the rules and the reasoning kept clearly apart.
How we researched this
Desk research. We ran no launch-monitor testing for this article and quote no measured distance gains — an earlier version implied measured precision it did not have. The equipment rule below is the governing bodies'; the research findings are from a USGA/R&A tee-height study cited in Sources; everything labelled editorial is our reasoning, not measurement; the numbers that matter for you come from your own testing.
The Rule First: What's Actually Regulated
The governing bodies' Equipment Rules (Part 6) define a tee as “a device designed to raise the ball off the ground” and state that a tee must not “be longer than 4 inches (101.6 mm)”, must not indicate line of play, and must not unduly influence the ball's movement or otherwise assist the player. Nothing in the rules prescribes a playing height — any legal tee at any height you like is fine.

What the USGA/R&A Research Actually Found
The governing bodies commissioned a study — “Effects of Tee Height on Drive Distance” (Mase & Myrhum, report R22-08) — combining robot testing and two phases of player testing. Its findings, summarised from the report:
- In player testing, decreasing tee height in general lowered the angle of attack, lowered clubhead and ball speeds, lowered launch angle, increased spin, and decreased carry and total distance.
- In robot testing, lowering the impact location on the face by 0.6 inch — all other swing characteristics kept the same — reduced driving distance by 2 to 13 yards depending on the club-ball combination.
- Crucially for this article: “No relationship between men's or women's normal teeing height and driving distance was found.” Players' self-chosen normal heights did not predict who hit it farther.
Read together: teeing markedly lower than normal measurably costs distance, but among golfers at their own normal heights there is no single measured optimum — which is why this page offers a starting heuristic and a test, not one exact number.
Why Higher-Teeing Is Attractive (Editorial Reasoning, Not Measurement)
The standard instruction logic, consistent in direction with the study's lower-tee findings but presented as reasoning rather than data:
- Drivers reward an upward strike. Hitting slightly up on the ball favours higher launch with less spin — the combination generally associated with carry for most amateur swing speeds.
- Face geometry. Strikes above the face's centre tend to launch higher and spin less than strikes below it. A tee height that makes an above-centre strike easier supports that pattern.
- The common starting point that follows: tee the ball so that roughly half the ball sits above the crown of the driver at address. This is a conventional instruction-community heuristic only — the USGA/R&A study above did not test or endorse it, and found no relationship between normal tee heights and distance.
Why this cannot yield one exact universal height: golfers differ in angle of attack, delivery, ball position and miss pattern, and drivers differ in face depth — and the USGA/R&A player data found no relationship between normal teeing height and distance across players. A height that helps an upward-hitting player can worsen a steep hitter's pop-up. Any article giving you a single number in millimetres for everyone is manufacturing precision.

How to Find Your Height
- Start at half-ball-above-crown. Hit a set of drives; note strike marks (face spray or wet grass on the face works) and ball flight.
- Low-face strikes or spinny flight? Tee slightly higher and retest — change one variable at a time. If you later want to experiment with ball position, do that separately, after tee height is settled.
- Pop-ups or crown contact? Tee slightly lower; a steep attack often does better with less ball above the crown.
- Re-check when equipment changes. A deeper or shallower driver face moves where "half above the crown" actually sits.
- If you have launch-monitor access, let carry and dispersion decide, not feel. That is the measured version of this whole article.
Practical Notes
- Consistent tee height needs consistent insertion depth — many players use a finger-grip reference or a stepped tee for repeatability. Choose whatever repeats.
- Nothing here applies to irons; this page concerns the driver only.

Limitations
We ran no testing of our own and recommend no branded tees. The measured findings above belong to the USGA/R&A study we cite, within its stated protocols; everything else is labelled editorial. What you have here is the governing constraint, the research, transparent reasoning, and a test you can run in twenty minutes — which is more useful than a fake exact number, including the one this page used to carry.
