How to Track Your Luggage in Real Time: Every Method Compared

The carousel stops and your bag is not on it. That moment — the claim form, the wait for a call that may not come — is one of the more stressful experiences in modern travel, and it is now substantially avoidable. Knowing how to track luggage in real time is a practical skill, and the single most useful development is not a new gadget at all: it is that airlines will now accept a location link from your tracker.

How we researched this

This is a desk-research guide, not a hands-on test. We have not flown with these devices to benchmark them, and we make no claims about how they performed for us. Device capabilities and prices come from the manufacturers' own announcements and product pages; battery and regulatory rules come from the relevant aviation authority and airline guidance; every source is listed at the end with the date we accessed it (28 July 2026). Where a figure comes from a vendor or an industry body with an interest in the result, we say so. Where we could not verify something, we mark it unverified rather than repeating it.

Start Here: Airlines Now Accept a Location Link

Until recently, a tracker told you where your bag was but gave the airline nothing it would act on. That changed with Apple's Share Item Location feature, introduced in iOS 18.2. It lets you generate a temporary link to an AirTag or Find My network accessory and send it to an airline's baggage team.

Airline participation has grown quickly. Apple's November 2024 announcement listed "more than 15 airlines"; by its January 2026 AirTag announcement Apple stated Share Item Location partners include "more than 50 airlines".

How the link is actually protected — this is worth stating precisely, because it is often described loosely. The Find My network itself is described by Apple as end-to-end encrypted and anonymous. The sharing mechanism is governed by access controls rather than by that same guarantee: per Apple, "Access to each link will be limited to a small number of people, and recipients will be required to authenticate in order to view the link through either their Apple Account or partner email address." The share "will be disabled as soon as a user is reunited with their item, can be stopped by the owner at any time, and will automatically expire after seven days."

Vendor-sourced effectiveness figures, labelled as such: in its January 2026 announcement Apple cites SITA, an IT provider to the airline industry, reporting that carriers using Share Item Location saw baggage delays fall by 26 percent and "truly lost" luggage fall by 90 percent. Those come from an industry body quoted by the vendor, not from an independent study. Treat the direction as credible and the precision as marketing.

Google has announced comparable functionality for Android's Find Hub, saying users "will be able to easily share your Bluetooth tag's location with some of your favorite airlines." Confirm current availability for your specific airline before relying on it.

Practical consequence: the value of a tracker is no longer just personal reassurance. It is evidence you can hand to the people who can actually retrieve the bag.

Why Traditional Bag Tags Are Not Enough

The paper or plastic tag from check-in works exactly as designed: if a bag is separated from its flight and later found, the tag matches it to your booking. What it cannot do is tell you anything while the bag is in transit. You cannot see whether it made your connection or was offloaded at the wrong terminal. You learn it is missing when the carousel stops.

Airlines have improved their internal tracking — many large carriers use RFID on bag labels — but that data reaches passengers only through whatever the airline chooses to expose in its app.

Method 1: Apple AirTag and the Find My Network

The AirTag remains the default choice for iPhone users. Apple released a second-generation AirTag in January 2026. Per Apple's announcement, it adds:

  • Precision Finding that works "up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation"
  • A speaker "50 percent louder than the previous generation" with a new chime
  • Apple's "second-generation Ultra Wideband chip — the same chip found in the iPhone 17 lineup"
  • Anti-stalking protection via "unique Bluetooth identifiers that change frequently"

How it works

You put the tag in your bag. Any passing iPhone, iPad or Mac in Bluetooth range anonymously relays its location to Apple, and you see the result in Find My. Precision Finding then uses Ultra Wideband to walk you to it once you are close — genuinely useful for picking your bag out of a pile.

Strengths

  • No subscription
  • Very large relay network wherever Apple devices are dense — which describes most commercial airports
  • Share Item Location works with 50+ airlines
  • User-replaceable CR2032 coin cell

Limitations

  • Not continuous tracking. The location updates only when some Apple device passes near the bag. In a cargo hold or an empty freight corridor, updates can be hours apart or absent entirely.
  • Locating, not finding. Full functionality requires an Apple device; Android users get unwanted-tracker alerts, not tracking.
  • Needs a holder or pouch to stay put inside a bag.
  • Unverified: Apple does not publish a battery figure for the second-generation tag. The commonly cited "about a year" applies to the original AirTag's CR2032 and is a reasonable expectation, not a specification for the new model.

Method 2: Android Trackers and Google Find Hub

Android's equivalent crowdsourced network is Find Hub (formerly Find My Device). Google lists compatible tags from Chipolo, Pebblebee and Motorola, including the Chipolo POP, LOOP and CARD, the Moto Tag and Moto Tag 2, and Pebblebee Clip 5 and Card 5.

Notably for travellers, Google says luggage brands July and Mokobara offer built-in Find Hub integration, so the tracking is part of the case rather than an object rattling around inside it.

The mechanics — and therefore the limitations — mirror Apple's: relay density decides usefulness, and updates are opportunistic rather than continuous.

Method 3: Airline Baggage Tracking Apps

Many carriers expose some of their internal scan data in their own apps, at no cost and with no hardware to buy. We are deliberately not naming specific airlines or ranking them here: we could not find authoritative, current, per-carrier documentation to support claims about which airlines offer what, and baggage-tracking features change without announcement. Check your own airline's current app documentation.

Strengths: free; drawn from the airline's own scan records; often push notifications at each milestone.

Limitations: updates are milestone-based (checked in, loaded, arrived), not continuous location; coverage varies by carrier and airport; interline journeys involving a partner airline frequently break the chain; and you are entirely dependent on the airline's own system working.

Best for: a free baseline layer alongside your own tag, rather than a replacement for it.

Method 4: Cellular GPS Trackers

These use a SIM and cellular networks (typically LTE-M or NB-IoT) to report position directly, independent of any crowdsourced network. We are not recommending specific models or quoting a price range here: subscription pricing varies by vendor, region and plan, and we could not verify a current figure from a primary source that would still be accurate when you read this. Check the vendor's own current pricing page.

Strengths: periodic position reporting rather than opportunistic relays; geofence alerts; platform-agnostic.

Limitations: an ongoing data subscription is required; the devices are bulkier; battery life is far shorter than a coin-cell tag; and there is no signal inside an aircraft hold regardless of what the marketing implies. Because these carry larger lithium-ion cells than a coin-cell tag, the battery rules below matter more for them — see the FAA thresholds.

What the rules actually say

You will often read that airlines "explicitly prohibit active transmitters in checked baggage." As a blanket statement about Bluetooth trackers that is not what the published guidance says. The FAA's PackSafe page on baggage with lithium batteries addresses "Baggage location tracking devices (or 'bag tags')" directly, and frames the limits around batteries: baggage equipped with lithium batteries is "only allowed in checked baggage when containing lithium metal batteries with a lithium content not exceeding 0.3 grams, or lithium ion batteries with a Watt-hour rating not exceeding 2.7 Wh." Spare batteries removed from baggage must travel per the spare-battery rules — that is, in the cabin. The FAA's own instruction for tracking devices is explicit and worth following literally: "Check with the airline before traveling with these devices," and it notes international regulations may differ from domestic ones.

What we deliberately do not claim: we have seen the figure "an AirTag contains about 0.1 g of lithium" repeated widely, but we could not verify it from Apple or a battery manufacturer's published specification, so we do not assert it. If whether your specific device falls under the 0.3 g threshold matters to you, get that figure from the cell manufacturer's datasheet rather than from a travel article — including this one.

Method 5: Integrated Lock and Case Trackers

These combine a TSA-accepted lock — openable by screening staff with a master key — or a suitcase itself with a Find My or Find Hub module built in. The appeal is one fewer loose object to pack, charge and lose.

Trade-offs: you are locked into whichever network the module uses; replacing the battery may be harder than swapping a coin cell; and an externally mounted module is more exposed to damage and removal than a tag zipped inside the bag.

What Nobody Can Promise You

Be sceptical of any guide implying continuous visibility of a checked bag. Three limits are structural, not brand-specific:

  • The hold is a blind spot. No consumer tracker meaningfully reports from inside a pressurised cargo hold.
  • Crowdsourced networks need crowds. Coverage at a major hub is not coverage at a regional airport at 3 a.m.
  • A location is not a recovery. Knowing your bag is in another country does not retrieve it — which is exactly why the airline-sharing feature matters more than another few metres of Bluetooth range.

Which Approach Fits You

  • Most travellers: your airline's app for free milestone data, plus one Bluetooth tag matched to your phone's ecosystem. This combination covers the large majority of realistic scenarios at one-off cost.
  • Android users: a Find Hub tag from Chipolo, Pebblebee or Motorola — an AirTag will not give you tracking.
  • Mixed-device households: match the tag to the phone that will actually be at the airport.
  • High-value or unusual cargo: a cellular tracker may justify its subscription — check the airline's policy for that device class first.
  • Minimalists: an integrated case or lock tracker, accepting the network lock-in.

The goal is not perfect tracking; no consumer device delivers that through an aircraft hold. It is enough visibility to know where the bag is when it matters — and, now, the ability to hand that evidence to someone who can go and get it.
